In a very strange qualifying session due to bad weather, the GTLM cars set better times than the Prototypes since they had to deal with a very damp track where they could barely find any traction at all. This will certainly make some interesting first part of the 24 hour race while the cars find their dry set up rhythm and some close racing could eventually lead to some caution flags. Both 911 RSR achieved the best times with car No. 911 and 912 followed closely by the No. 100 BMW M6 and the Ferraris No. 68 and 62. The Corvette C7R No. 4 finished 6th overall barely behind the Ferraris.
Now, come race time, the Prototypes will be moved to the front despite the times, this measure is taken on account of safety since the weather is expected to be dry for the race and the power difference can’t be overlooked. The 7th position of qualifying belonged to the No. 7 Oreca from the Prototype Challenge class, interestingly enough that this class has no traction control and still Johnny Mowlem managed a better time than the first Prototype, the Nissan No. 37 driven by Mikhail Aleshin who will lead at the start of the 24 Hour race. The Heart of Racing’s Porsche GT3 R No. 73 qualified first for the GTD category with Norbert Siedler at the wheel. Many other teams played it safe knowing that in a 24 Hour race it’s not all about the start but the pace and consistency and just came out for a few laps to set a time.
